Give us a little bit of background about yourself!
Hi! I’m Jolie Richards. I recently graduated from Temple University with a journalism degree and a minor in political science. I’m originally from New Jersey, but decided to stay in Philly after graduating! I’m a first-generation graduate, and I’m very proud of how far I’ve come.
Describe yourself in three words.
Outgoing, funny and determined
What did you want to be when you were growing up?
When applying to colleges, I planned on majoring in political science, as I knew I wanted to make a difference in underserved communities and for people whose voices weren’t always heard or represented. I thought that political science would be the best way for me to create an impact.
When I started at Temple, I was a political science major and was planning to minor in journalism or communications. After taking my first journalism class, I realized this was a career I could see myself pursuing. Journalism gave me a way to learn about important issues while also connecting with people and telling their stories.
What’s something few people knew about you, but you wish they did?
I wish people knew how unserious I am. I think my resting face can throw people off and make me seem more serious or reserved than I actually am.
If you could give a piece of advice to your high school/younger self, what would it be?
I would tell my younger self that you don’t have to have everything figured out right away. You’re still young, and it’s okay if you don’t know what to do just yet.
