Rising Stars is a series of thoughts, reflections and perspectives by the interns at Devine + Partners. Amirah Pooree is a junior at Temple University studying Vocal Performance and Communications with a minor in Political Science.

One of the things I love most about studying communications is how wide the field is. It feels less like a straight path and more like a universe of possibilities. Every time I try something new, I realize there’s another direction I could go, another part of the industry that excites me just as much as the last.

Broadcast journalism has always been one of those sparks for me. There is something about being on the news, telling stories in real time, and helping people understand the world around them that pulls me in every time. I can picture myself in a studio or out in the field, bringing information to people who need it. For me, broadcast news mixes creativity, responsibility, and connection.

Simultaneously, politics deeply interests me. Communications plays a key role in how leaders speak to the public and how messages shape the country. I’ve imagined what it would be like to work in the White House one day as an administrative assistant. I feel a calling to help bring about the change that so many of us want to see in the world. Communication isn’t just about words but about guiding how people understand complex issues and ideas.

Regardless, every personal experience, big or small, I’ve had so far is shaping the way I view the world of communications.

About a month ago, I had the opportunity to staff a fashion show for Authenticity Projects. I didn’t realize how much communications were woven into every part of it. Coordinating people, keeping everything organized, ensuring the event ran smoothly, and representing the brand all required strong communication skills. Fashion might seem far from journalism or politics, but the skills behind it connect everything. That experience showed me how flexible and creative the field can be.

I’m still figuring out exactly where I belong in all of this, but I think that’s the most exciting part. I enjoy that communications gives me room to explore and grow without locking me into one version of my future.

Whether I end up in a newsroom, in the halls of the White House, behind the scenes of major events, or somewhere I haven’t even imagined yet, every step is teaching me something new. That’s what I think makes this field so exciting. It’s not just one career. It’s a collection of experiences that allow you to find your voice, your strengths, and your place in the world.
