Want TV news coverage for your clients? You have to think like a news producer, and here’s how you do it. ⬇️
I’ve worked with various television news stations in Philadelphia over the last several weeks to tell longer stories of organizations, such as The Mann Center for the Performing Arts and Reach Cyber Charter School, creating community impact. Each experience further affirmed one thing – PR professionals are essentially news producers. 📰📺

Whenever you are securing broadcast segments for your clients, remember how important it is to work closely with the station producer 🤝 to craft that story that deserves to be told. Specifically:
👩💼Set the right people up for interviews.
Whether it’s the CEO of a company or a family that a non-profit serves, offer up and prepare the right people who will provide the right expertise and powerful anecdotes.
📝Craft short, but compelling, talking points.
You only get about four minutes of TV time if you’re lucky, so make each second count with the messaging. Choose captivating messages that are on brand for the client, yet comprehensible for the reporter.
📸 Gather the right multimedia.
Be intentional when asked to send photos or video to accompany the segment. Do the images and video add to the story or take away from it? Are they in the right format? Consider all of these things when choosing.
⏰ Be prompt about everything.
Give the producer what they need right away when asked. Make sure your client shows up to the scheduled interview early. Remember – time is of the essence, especially for TV.

Then, when that perfect story finally airs, you’ll be glad of the smart work you put in to help make it happen.
